Academia Sinica Europæa (ASE) is an intellectual interface between China and Europe. ASE aims to facilitate the exchange of information, ideas, knowledge and experience. The institution's objective is to deepen the dialogue between China and Europe through mutual understanding. It believes in a constructive dialogue between civilisations which benefits all.

As an interface, ASE presents to Europeans the complexity of contemporary China, and helps the Chinese to understand the reality of today's Europe. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the European Union and China, as the two main rising entities, have much to exchange and to share. ASE is a bridge which facilitates the flow of ideas.

ASE operates from Shanghai, in the Pudong New Area, a symbol of China 's reforms and opening-up success. ASE is not only in the heart of a Chinese cosmopolitan city but also in the heart of a unique, visible and permanent link between China and the European Union, China Europe International Business School (CEIBS). While CEIBS is a learning interface from the management and business angle, ASE is an intellectual interface between the two edges of the Eurasian continent.

European Studies Course

The European Studies course at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) offers thoroughly grounded knowledge of the social and political affairs as well as the culture (including language) of two major continental European regions, the French- and German-speaking areas, whose languages are themselves important international languages and who play a prominent role in the process of pan-European integration. The curriculum devotes considerable room to language study. It also concentrates the European Studies emphasis on the comparison of European societies and politics, on the economic and political integration of Europe, and on the governance of the European Union. However, specialised knowledge, such as that in business and trade, can also be acquired. Students can opt to complete a full Minor in political science.

The Department of Government and International Studies (GIS)

European Studies is located within the GIS Department of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The Department offers undergraduate degrees in either Government and International Studies or European Studies, as well as a Master (SocSc) in European Studies (Sino-European Relations). It contributes to the University's China Studies program, hosts a European Documentation Centre sponsored by the European Union in Brussels and is a major contributor to the Hong Kong and Macau Association of European Studies and the David C. Lam Institute for East/West Studies. European Studies currently has co-operation and student exchange agreements with universities in France (Angers, Besançon, Brest, Lille, Quimper, Paris), Germany (Brühl/Köln, Düsseldorf, Erfurt, Göttingen, Konstanz, Leipzig, Nürnberg, Offenburg, Witten/Herdecke) and Austria (Graz).

The European Documentation Centre (EDC)

An agreement between HKBU and the Commission of the European Union signed in November 1995 accorded the HKBU the status of a European Documentation Centre. Located on the 8th floor of the David C. Lam Building, the same building as the GIS Department, it has become a centre of learning and research since March 1997.

It is a specialist library which receives, on a regular basis, all the official publications of the institutions of the European Union. These publications are available for consultation, during weekdays, by both students and staff at HKBU, as well as by the general public of Hong Kong.

The European Documentation Centre also has privileged access to European Union databases, and receives assistance from the European Commission in the organisation of seminars, meetings, training courses, exchange visits, relations with other European information networks and relays, etc.

The European Documentation Centre at HKBU - which is one of only two such centres in Hong Kong - provides an important study and research basis for students. It is of particular use to students following the European Studies course, in which knowledge of the European Union is an essential requirement.
